UK: First country to approve Omicron vaccine

The UK has authorized the use of the first  covid-19 vaccine for the Omicron variant. This is the first country to do so. The vaccine licensing will now pave the way for an enhanced campaign in the fall using the two-strain vaccine from Moderna.

Highlights : 

  • A conditional license for the vaccine has been issued by the "Medical Products and Drugs Administration". He is also the first authoritative person in the world to certify the original Covid-19 vaccine.
  • The vaccine is licensed for the original strain as well as the Omicron BA.1 coronavirus strain.
  • It has been approved for use by people over the age of 18.
  • The UK will now focus on the booster program for people  over 50, who are very vulnerable to the development of Covid.

                        Omicron B.1.1.529 is a variant of SARS-CoV-2. The Gene Surveillance Network  first reported on this variant in South Africa in November 2021. The first case was discovered in Botswana and has now spread around the world and has become a commonly circulating variant. variable. Besides the original BA.1 variant, many sub-variants such as BA.2, BA.3, BA.4 and BA.5 have emerged over time. To protect against serious illness and hospitalizations caused by Omicron variants BA.1 and BA.2, 3 doses of the covid-19 vaccine are provided. Variants BA.4 and BA.5  are more infectious than other sub-variants.
