Japan-IMD Partnership on Climate Change

 The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has partnered with the Government of Japan and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on climate change. They  launched an initiative to accelerate climate action in 10 states and union territories in India.

Important data associated with the initiative include;

  • This initiative will expand support for Country-Defined Contributions (NDCs), with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions. It will also ensure climate-resilient development.
  • This initiative will be launched in conjunction with the IMD at the Department of Earth Sciences and the Department of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
  • This is followed by the cabinet launch of India's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) update, which will be carried over to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
  • Under this initiative, UNDP will work  with the IMD to promote climate resilience and the MNRE to promote climate change mitigation.
  • They will promote climate change mitigation by placing clean energy infrastructure and low-emission technologies in key areas such as health; Transport; Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Agriculture.
The initiative will also demonstrate resilient climate planning at the local level through a climate information system at 30 Gram Panchayats. It aims to promote green jobs and green entrepreneurship in areas such as renewable energy by providing skills and training to more than 2,000 people. For this project, Japan  provided a climate grant of USD 5.16 million  to UNDP India.
