An area of ​​low pressure over the southern Andaman Sea is expected to strengthen into a hurricane on Sunday, the Met office  said. According to the Met Bulletin on Friday, Kolkata is expected to receive heavy rain and thunderstorms between May 10 and May 13.

 A: On Friday, the system appeared as an area of ​​low pressure over the waters south of the Andaman  and southeastern Bay of Bengal, more than 1,000 kilometers from Bengal. 

 Q: What are the possible next steps? 

 A: The system is forecast to turn into a tropical depression on Saturday and a cyclone on Sunday. "The system is very likely to move to the northwest and strengthen into a depression over the southeastern Bay of Bengal on the evening of May 7  and  a cyclone over the east-central part of the Bay of Bengal on the evening of May 8. 5. It is highly likely that it will continue to move northwestward and to the west-central and contiguous northwest of the Bay of Bengal, off the northern coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha  on May 10". Met news report on Friday afternoon. 



 Q: Does that mean it will make landfall between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha?

 A: Not necessarily. “There are many possibilities. The storm may change direction and move towards Bangladesh. It may be weakened by warm, dry northwesterly winds in the middle layers of the atmosphere.  G.K. Das, Director, Bureau of Meteorology, Kolkata, said. 

Q: What is the likely impact on Bengal? 

 A: Gangetic Bengal including Kolkata is expected to receive heavy rain from May 10-13. Met officials say there is a chance of strong  thunderstorms in Kolkata from May 10. Actual impacts will depend on the course of the storm. 

Q : What will the tornado be  called? 

 A: If the system turns into a tornado, it will be called Asani, a name given by Sri Lanka. In Sinhala, Asani means anger. 

Q: What about tornadoes and May? 

 A: If the system turns into a tornado, it will be the third to fly over the bay in May in three  years in a row - Amphan in May 2020 and Yaas in May 2021. know hot sea surface conditions in May are ideal for cyclone formation.
