India rises, but UP death toll falls in pandemic year

According to data from the Civil Registry System "CRS", Uttar Pradesh has recorded 8.73 lakh deaths in 2020 compared to 9.44 lakh deaths recorded in 2019.

While the upward trend in the number of registered deaths in India also continued into 2020, Uttar Pradesh, the  most populous state of the country, saw a sharp decline, despite the fact that the total number of deaths is likely to increase. due to the Covid19 pandemic. .

According to data from  Civil Registry System "CRS", Uttar Pradesh records 8.73 lakh deaths in 2020 compared to 9.44 lakh deaths recorded in 2019.  Kerala, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Delhi also recorded a decrease in the number of registered deaths in 2020 compared to the previous year. In fact, as a percentage, Telangana recorded a decrease of 11% compared to a decrease of 7.5% of UP. What makes UP's drop all the more significant, however, is that the state has had a low number of death records. In 2019, India is on the rise, but UP has seen a drop in death registrations in 2020

Only about 63% of all deaths are recorded in the state. The state's death registration rate increased slowly from about 47% in 2011 to 63% in 2019, while the national average increased from 67% to 92% over the same period.

Several other states, including Kerala, Telangana and Delhi, recorded more than 90% of all deaths.

CRS data shows registered births and deaths, not  actual  births and deaths. The total number of death registrations in India has increased from 76.41 lakhs in 2019 to 81.16 lakhs in 2020.

The actual number of births and deaths in India is estimated through a separate survey process known as the Sample Registration System, or SRS. In 2019, for example, there were an estimated 83.01 thousand deaths in India, of which 76.41 thousand deaths, or 92%, were recorded in the CRS.  SRS data for 2020 is  not yet available.  In states with high levels of registration, the actual number of death registrations in a given year increases or decreases with the actual number of deaths. Thus, if the number of deaths is higher than the previous year, the number of people registered for death will also increase, because there is very little gap between  the number of deaths and the number of registered people. Similarly, if the number of deaths decreases, the death record will also decrease.

But in states with low levels  of enrollment, enrollment could largely increase even with fewer deaths than the previous year. 4,444 An estimated 14.9 lakh people died in Uttar Pradesh in 2019, of which 9.44 lakh deaths were recorded. The estimated death toll for 2020 is not yet available, but  is expected to be higher than the previous year due to Covid19. The state  recorded 8,364 Covid-related deaths that year, according to official figures.

The figures for Delhi and Telangana are also surprising. Delhi, which has a mortality registration rate of 100%, recorded 10,536 Covid-related deaths in 2020. However, the total number of  deaths recorded in that year was 2,495 fewer than the previous year. . This can only happen  if the number of non-Covid deaths falls by more than 13,000 year-over-year. Delhi records about 1.4 lakh deaths annually.
Due to the containment and restriction of  all types of activities, it is expected that some types of deaths, such as traffic accidents or industrial accidents, will decrease in 2020. But these numbers are yet to be quantified.  In Telangana, the number of registered deaths in 2020 decreased by 25,000 people compared to 2019, while Kerala recorded a decrease of 19,584 people. According to official data, Telangana records 1,544 Covid deaths in 2020, while Kerala records 3,120,444 people.
