CWC meet debates on want to faucet into youngsters vote
Priyanka informed members that most of the party's candidates in the U.P. under 45 years old
Engaging young people to revive the old major party was one of the main points that emerged during Sunday's meeting of the Congressional Work Committee (CWC), a source familiar with the proceedings said. on Monday. Leader Jairam Ramesh raised the issue while talking about the party's dwindling electoral fortunes and demanded a focus on the youth segment.
Agreeing with Mr. Ramesh, the party's general secretary for Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, informed CWC that most of the party's candidates are under 45 years of age.
In Uttar Pradesh, the party focused on youth and women's suffrage by selecting 40% of female candidates and publishing a separate youth manifesto. While these became a talking point during the campaign, they did not translate into seats or split votes.
Congress won just two seats in the 403-member House of Representatives and just over two percent of the vote.
Given that Parliament has played an important role for more than three decades in Uttar Pradesh, many believe that Ms. Vadra's aim is to reorganize rather than win seats.
At the CWC meeting, former party leader Rahul Gandhi agreed to the proposal that the party should participate in the youth vote.
"The situation is very serious"
The CWC meeting, convened to discuss the party's decline in recent council elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa, passed a resolution that the situation was "very serious".
The Speaker of the National Assembly will take immediate corrective measures to strengthen the organization and a chintan shivir meeting (brainstorming session) will be held to prepare for all upcoming elections in this year, next year and the Lok Sabha polls in 2024, KC general secretary Venugopal said after the CWC meeting.
